How to Dip Dye Hair with Food Coloring
As you well know, money has been tight for my family this summer. It's been a struggle to find enough for my kids to do anything, so when they come to me asking for something I do my best to find an economical way to get it. My daughter was wanting her hair dip dyed. Since I didn't know much about that kind of thing, I started researching it. I found that you can dip dye your hair with some common household products, one of them being food coloring. So I set out on a mission to get this accomplished today.

I had the sticks in the picture for stirring but I did not use them after all. But, you WILL need;
- Food Coloring (your choice of color)
- White Hair Conditioner
- Aluminum Foil
- Toothbrush
- Paper cup
- Paper towels

It's probably easier if you section out the hair first and tie off each section with a rubber band. I did not have rubber bands so we just made do. She chose the light colored neon blue food coloring. I squirted some out in the cup.
I took a section of hair at a time, placed a paper towel under the section of hair and using the toothbrush, applied the food coloring to about 2 to 3 inches of hair. You can do more or less whatever your preference is.
Update: When I first posted this I left out something and I apologize. After you put the food coloring on the section of hair, you take some of the white conditioner and cover the strip of hair with the conditioner right over the food coloring. I used my hands...and yes I had food coloring on my hand. (you could use some plastic gloves like the ones that come in the hair coloring kits or rubber gloves).
After I made sure the entire portion was coated with food coloring I took a piece of aluminum foil and wrapped it. Then I went on to the next section and so forth.
So once I had all the food coloring applied and foil wrapped around the sections she had to wait for 2 hours for the food coloring to work. The longer you leave it wrapped the better the color will be.
After 2 hours I took the foil off 1 section of hair at a time and rinsed it under warm water. Now you will see lots of food coloring running under the water and it might look like it is all coming out but trust me it is not. There will be plenty of food coloring left on the hair.
Once we got it all off, she blow dried her hair and that is how she got her hair dip dyed, by using blue neon food coloring. The food coloring will fade after each washing. How long it stays in depends on how often you wash your hair.
